Is your child ready\nto go back to school? There\u2019s a lot to take care of during the last few days of\nsummer. Obviously, you\u2019ll need to go shopping for new clothes, books and\nsupplies, but it\u2019s also important to make sure your little one is in good\nhealth before classes start taking up much of their time. For this reason, your\nback-to-school list isn\u2019t complete until you check off \u201cvisit the dentist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Why Your Child Needs to See the Dentist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your child\u2019s smile is meant to last a lifetime, but this is\ncompletely dependent on the care their teeth receive. The sugars and starches\nin many foods can cause oral bacteria to start secreting acid that eats through\nenamel and forms cavities. Eventually, bacteria can reach the tooth\u2019s pulp and\ncause an infection, which will result in a lot of pain and further health\ncomplications if it\u2019s not treated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many cases, teaching your child to brush and floss everyday\nwill help them avoid tooth decay, but unfortunately, this isn\u2019t always enough.\nThe mouth has a lot of spaces that are hard to reach, and this is especially\ntrue for younger children that aren\u2019t fully coordinated yet. Worse yet, plaque\nthat isn\u2019t cleaned in time hardens into tartar that can\u2019t be removed at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s best to bring your child to the family dentist in\nOklahoma City at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings. Even if there\nisn\u2019t a problem that\u2019s causing them pain right now, cavities and other health\nproblems can go undetected. A thorough examination will detect these issues in\ntheir early stages when treatment is easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeing the Dentist Before School Starts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once school starts again, things will get a lot busier for\neveryone. It\u2019ll be harder to find time for dental visits when you have to worry\nabout your child missing class or needing to make up their homework. It\u2019s much\nmore convenient to have the appointment done during the summer when there\u2019s\nstill plenty of free time during the day. Furthermore, children tend to be in a\nbetter mood overall when they\u2019re still free from the stresses of school, which\ncan help make medical appointments much more pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your child indulged in a lot of candy, soda and other\nsugary treats during their vacation, a dental checkup becomes especially\nimportant. Any decay should be found and treated as soon as possible; otherwise\nyou might need to worry about scheduling more extensive procedures such as a\nroot canal or a tooth extraction, both of which require a few days to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school year will begin before you know it. If you want\nto take advantage of the break to make sure your child\u2019s pearly whites are\nwell-protected, now is your last chance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
