So when that pain suddenly disappears, you might assume your tooth has finally healed. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. In some situations, a tooth that stops hurting may actually need prompt dental treatment.

If your dentist recommends root canal therapy even though you’re no longer experiencing pain, there’s likely a reason. Here’s what could be happening inside your tooth.

Why Would a Toothache Suddenly Stop?

Tooth pain often happens when the inner part of a tooth, called the pulp, becomes irritated or infected. This area contains nerves and blood vessels, which is why inflammation or infection can cause significant discomfort.

If the pulp becomes severely damaged or dies, however, the nerves inside the tooth may stop functioning. When that happens, the pain can disappear.

That might sound like good news, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the underlying problem is gone. The infection or damage can remain even after the tooth no longer hurts.

Can a Tooth Needing a Root Canal Heal on Its Own?

Unfortunately, an infected or severely damaged tooth generally can’t repair itself. Once the pulp has become infected or irreversibly damaged, simply waiting for the pain to return won’t solve the underlying issue.

In fact, the infection can continue spreading beyond the inside of the tooth. You may eventually develop swelling, tenderness, or an abscess around the tooth. Some dental infections can become serious if they aren’t treated.

That’s why a sudden improvement in symptoms isn’t necessarily a reason to cancel your dental appointment.

Why Might Your Dentist Recommend a Root Canal?

Your dentist doesn’t determine whether you need a root canal based on pain alone. They may also examine the tooth, take dental X-rays, and look for signs of infection or damage.

Root canal therapy can remove infected or damaged tissue from inside the tooth, clean and disinfect the area, and seal the tooth to help prevent additional infection. Treating the problem can also allow you to keep your natural tooth rather than eventually needing an extraction.

Every tooth and situation is different, so your dentist will consider your symptoms, examination findings, and imaging when recommending treatment.

Don’t Ignore a Tooth That Suddenly Feels Better

If you’ve had a serious toothache that suddenly disappeared, it’s still worth having the tooth evaluated. Pain going away doesn’t necessarily mean the problem has resolved, particularly if your dentist has already identified signs of infection or damage.

Getting treatment when it’s recommended can help address the underlying problem before it has an opportunity to become more complicated.

A pain-free tooth isn’t always a healthy tooth, so don’t let the disappearance of your symptoms stop you from getting the care you need.

About the Practice

At Mitchell Smile Design, Dr. Bradley Mitchell provides personalized dental care with a focus on helping patients improve their oral health and feel confident in their smiles.
