My Dentist Says I Need a Root Canal – How Long Will It Take?

October 3, 2026

Hearing that you need a root canal may make you nervous, especially if you’re unsure how much time you’ll spend in the dentist’s chair or what to expect afterward. Fortunately, modern root canal treatment is generally comfortable and often takes less time than patients anticipate. Understanding the procedure and recovery process can help you feel more prepared for your appointment.

How Long Does a Root Canal Appointment Take?

Most root canal procedures take approximately 60 to 90 minutes, although some may require up to 2 hours or multiple appointments. The exact time depends on several factors, including:

  • Which tooth needs treatment.
  • The extent of the infection.
  • The complexity of its root canal system.

Front teeth typically have fewer canals and may be quicker to treat. Molars have multiple roots and more complicated anatomy, which can make treatment take longer.

During the procedure, your dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia. Once you’re comfortable, they will create a small opening in the tooth, remove the infected or damaged pulp, and carefully clean and disinfect the canals. The canals are then filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from entering again.

Depending on your situation, your dentist may complete the treatment in 1 visit or place a temporary filling and schedule another appointment. A dental crown is often recommended afterward to protect the treated tooth, particularly when a back tooth has undergone a root canal.

What Happens During Root Canal Recovery?

Most patients can return to their normal routines within a day, although some tenderness or sensitivity is common for several days. The tissues surrounding the treated tooth may feel sore, especially when biting or chewing.

Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, if appropriate for your health. Follow their instructions regarding medication and aftercare.

Here are a few tips to support a comfortable recovery:

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth: Until your permanent restoration is placed, avoid putting excessive pressure on the tooth.
  • Choose softer foods: Yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and soups can make eating more comfortable.
  • Maintain oral hygiene: Continue brushing and flossing carefully to keep the area clean.
  • Follow medication instructions: Take prescribed or recommended medications as directed.
  • Attend your follow-up appointment: If your dentist recommends a crown, don’t delay getting it placed.

What’s Not Normal During Recovery?

Mild discomfort should gradually improve. However, contact your dentist if you experience severe or worsening pain, significant swelling, an uneven bite, or symptoms that don’t improve. Fever or spreading facial swelling also requires prompt attention.

A properly treated root canal should eliminate the infected tissue causing the original problem while preserving your natural tooth.

Although root canals have a reputation for being unpleasant, the procedure is designed to relieve pain caused by infection and help save your tooth. Most appointments take around 1 to 2 hours, and recovery is generally manageable with proper care.
